Report:

All of the Connaught Sports Finals were ran off successfully over the past number of weeks. The committee would sincerely like to thank all those who helped on the different days but in particular to Ann Hyland, Frances & Denis Mulkeen, Tommy Marren and the Achonary Pioneers, Fr Michael Mannion and all the referees and helpers. A special word of thanks to Mary McGovern who obtained the use of the fantastic soccer club facility in Ballyglass free of charge. Everyone was very impressed by the venue and a great day was had by all.

Some trouble arose in relation to referees however. There was great difficulty in finding neutral referees on many occasions. Some people were not happy with the Basketball refereeing in Charlestown and have suggested that we pay referees in future years. The committee feel that this would be unwise and unfair on the referees who have put timeless effort into refereeing matches over the past few years. One suggestion was that the regions should pay a referee to help in the Connaught Finals if they cannot provide a referee on the day. A number of regions failed to provide any referee at any of the sports despite it being one of the prerequisites to taking part.

There are still problems arising with participants taking part in more than one event. It is difficult to avoid clashes in the timetable when this is the case. If participants were allowed only to take part in one event, this would include a lot of other pioneers in other competitions.

Finally, the committee would like to extend a sincere ‘thank you’ to Sean T. Kelly who will be retiring this year from refereeing. He has put a huge effort into the running of all matches, both soccer and gaelic, over the past number of years. He will be greatly missed as a referee in the coming years. The committee would like to invite Sean and his wife to the Banquet dinner in the Belmont Hotel, Knock on Nov. 8th where he will be thanked formally for his work.
